Signal addresses hot mic logic vulnerability in call tear down state machine

Encrypted messaging platform maintainers have distributed emergency client updates to fix a logic flaw in voice call state machines. The vulnerability allowed audio capture streams to remain active and transmitting for up to 30 seconds after a user disconnected a call.

The security issue affected Signal desktop and mobile messaging applications. A race condition within WebRTC session termination subroutines failed to immediately signal local audio capture drivers upon user disconnect initiation. As a result, when a user hung up a call, the local microphone stream continued capturing ambient audio and transmitting encrypted packets to the remote endpoint until session cleanup timers expired. Signal developers deployed out-of-band client updates to force instant driver teardown.

Subverting secure voice session state machines exposes sensitive verbal communications to unintentional eavesdropping. Because enterprise executives and security personnel rely on encrypted messaging tools for confidential conversations, lingering audio streams introduce significant eavesdropping and privacy risks.

– Update Signal desktop and mobile applications immediately to the latest patched client releases across all enterprise devices.

– Enforce automated application patch management policies via Mobile Device Management MDM solutions.

– Inspect application permission controls on mobile endpoints to restrict background microphone execution rights.

– Brief corporate personnel on verifying call termination states when conducting sensitive verbal communications.

Secure communication application defense demands rigid state machine validation and rapid client patch deployment to ensure encrypted messaging channels remain completely protected from audio leaks. #CodeDefence #Signal #Eavesdropping #MobileSecurity #Encryption #AppSec #Privacy #PatchManagement
