FBI warns ongoing FortiBleed attacks lock out legitimate FortiGate firewall and SSL VPN administrators

Federal law enforcement authorities have issued an urgent cyber alert warning of widespread ongoing exploitation targeting perimeter firewall infrastructure. Threat actors leverage memory corruption flaws to steal active administrative cookies and lock enterprise security teams out of management dashboards.

The threat campaign, dubbed FortiBleed, targets exposed Fortinet FortiGate firewalls and SSL VPN gateways across enterprise networks. Threat actors transmit malformed authentication requests to extract cleartext administrative session tokens and credentials from system memory. Upon gaining access, adversaries revoke legitimate administrative accounts, reconfigure local firewall rules, and establish persistent SSL VPN backdoors across perimeter gateways. FBI advisories urge immediate session termination and out-of-band credential resets.

Subverting perimeter firewall management controls destroys enterprise network isolation. Because FortiGate gateways manage perimeter access policies and site-to-site VPN tunnels, an administrative lockout permits threat actors to manipulate traffic routing rules, disable security inspection daemons, and pivot into internal subnets.

– Execute out-of-band administrative credential resets across all managed Fortinet FortiGate appliances immediately.

– Invalidate all active SSL VPN and web administration session tokens across firewalls using console CLI access.

– Restrict public internet access to FortiGate management interfaces by placing admin panels on dedicated out-of-band management VLANs.

– Inspect system access logs and administrator registries for unauthorized user creations or altered account permissions.

Perimeter firewall defense demands strict control plane isolation and rapid session revoking protocols to ensure network security controllers remain protected from unauthenticated session hijacking. #CodeDefence #Fortinet #FortiGate #FortiBleed #SSLVPN #Firewall #CISA #IncidentResponse #AppSec
