CISA adds actively exploited Citrix NetScaler SAML memory overflow vulnerability CVE-2026-88779 to KEV catalog

Federal cybersecurity authorities have updated the Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog to order emergency remediation across federal civilian agencies for a new memory overflow vulnerability in perimeter access controllers. Unauthenticated threat actors are actively weaponizing SAML authentication subroutines to crash authentication services and execute targeted denial of service attacks.

The catalog addition features Citrix NetScaler ADC and Gateway memory buffer restriction flaw CVE-2026-88779 carrying a CVSS score of 8.7. The vulnerability impacts customer-managed appliances configured as SAML Service Providers or Identity Providers. Threat telemetry confirms adversaries issuing malformed SAML assertions to trigger memory overflow conditions, causing repeated appliance crashes and disabling remote access portals. Under Binding Operational Directive 26-04, federal civilian executive branch agencies face a mandatory October 7 compliance deadline.

Subverting central SAML identity federation controllers disrupts enterprise single sign-on boundaries and user access workflows. Because NetScaler appliances manage active user session states and federated authentication pipelines, repeated memory overflow exploitation forces continuous service outages and leaves perimeter access portals unavailable.

– Apply official security maintenance updates released by Citrix across all affected NetScaler ADC and Gateway appliances immediately.

– Verify SAML configuration states across NetScaler deployments to identify active Service Provider or Identity Provider roles.

– Restrict public internet visibility of NetScaler management interfaces by placing administrative panels on dedicated VLANs.

– Monitor system process stability and inspect authentication logs for malformed SAML assertion payload spikes.

Perimeter identity gateway protection demands rapid patch execution and continuous SAML traffic monitoring to ensure enterprise access controllers remain shielded from unauthenticated memory overflow attacks. #CodeDefence #Citrix #NetScaler #SAML #CISA #KEV #DenialOfService #NetworkSecurity #AppSec
