CISA reaches October 4 compliance deadline for actively exploited Fortinet FortiMail path traversal zero day CVE-2026-104286

Federal civilian executive branch agencies face today’s mandatory compliance deadline under Binding Operational Directive 26-04 to remediate an actively exploited email security gateway vulnerability. Unpatched systems face mandatory disconnection orders across federal enterprise networks.

The mandatory remediation mandate applies to Fortinet FortiMail path traversal vulnerability CVE-2026-104286 with a CVSS score of 9.8. Threat actors exploit improper URI path normalization and NULL character handling within web management handlers to bypass path restrictions, writing arbitrary files to the host operating system and executing system commands. CISA ordered federal agencies to apply vendor updates or enforce temporary CLI workarounds disabling Identity-Based Encryption IBE features.

Subverting secure email gateways exposes corporate messaging streams and identity verification pathways. Because FortiMail appliances process incoming enterprise email traffic and manage user directory connections, an unauthenticated gateway takeover permits threat actors to intercept sensitive communications, harvest employee credentials, and pivot into internal subnets.

– Force immediate installation of official security updates published by Fortinet across all FortiMail appliance deployments.

– Apply temporary workarounds disabling Identity-Based Encryption IBE features via command-line interface where patches cannot be immediately installed.

– Restrict public internet access to FortiMail web management portals using dedicated out-of-band management subnets.

– Inspect system access logs for malformed URI paths containing NULL characters or unverified file modification requests.

Perimeter email gateway protection demands strict adherence to threat-informed remediation deadlines and proactive access control microsegmentation to ensure messaging controllers remain protected from unauthenticated path traversal exploits. #CodeDefence #Fortinet #FortiMail #CISA #KEV #PathTraversal #RCE #EmailSecurity #AppSec
