Web security research writeups have disclosed active wild exploitation targeting a critical unauthenticated privilege escalation vulnerability in a popular web acceleration plugin. The flaw permits remote unauthenticated actors to forge administrative user accounts and plant persistent web shell implants.
The vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2026-40112 with a CVSS score of 9.8, impacts LiteSpeed Cache for WordPress installations prior to version 6.5.1. The flaw involves weak hash generation logic during user impersonation and cookie verification routines. Unauthenticated remote adversaries transmit crafted HTTP requests to guess administrative hash values, creating unauthorized administrative accounts and uploading malicious PHP files to execute operating system commands on target web hosting servers.
Compromising primary publishing web servers provides adversaries with immediate initial access to enterprise web hosting environments. Because web servers host database connection strings, local storage vaults, and internal API tokens, an unauthenticated takeover permits threat actors to deploy web shells, siphon customer data, and pivot into adjacent internal subnets.
– Upgrade LiteSpeed Cache plugin installations immediately to patched version 6.5.1 or higher.
– Inspect WordPress user registries for unauthorized administrative accounts created recently without approval.
– Deploy web application firewall inspection rules to block malformed HTTP requests targeting LiteSpeed Cache endpoints.
– Enforce strict database user permission scoping to prevent web server processes from modifying underlying user tables.
Web application perimeter protection relies on robust hash verification and rapid patch deployment to guarantee core publishing platforms cannot be exploited for unauthenticated privilege escalation. #CodeDefence #WordPress #LiteSpeedCache #PrivilegeEscalation #AppSec #PatchManagement #WebSecurity #VulnerabilityManagement
